Use of Basic Shapes - Shape Language

 Hey everyone!

It's been a little bit, but I'm back I'm back with another art update!

I've been hard at work doing some behind-the-scenes stuff, like learning different software and fine-tuning my process. I'll have more to show this weekend, for sure! But for now, I have been working on my Shape Language- which means I'm working on conveying themes present with basic shapes in more complex designs.

While these drawings don't have to contain the shapes I'm referencing, the general shape of the artwork should communicate the ideals present in the "shape language" or the indirect symbolism that the art conveys.

For example, round characters are seen as safe, happy, or good-natured, whereas characters with a square design are seen as rough, sturdy, and strong. Triangular characters, on the other hand, are seen as dynamic or unpredictable, which can make them fun to both design and see in a work.

Now that that's out of the way, I wanted to show you my designs and tell you a little bit about them!

Starting off, I have a Frog Tourist to the far left. If you can't tell, his design is very sturdy and straightforward. You can tell he's the kind of guy that has a detailed itinerary for every step of his vacation! He was fun to design and a little out of my comfort zone, since I don't usually work with amphibian characters. But that was what this project was about to me- pushing my limits!

My second character is an ancient raptor character! Fun fact- most raptors had feathers, which shows their direct link to birds. That's why I made my raptor the triangle character, as he possesses both ground speed and agility, as well as the ability to fly. Drawing dinosaurs was one of my favorite things to do as a kid, so this was a natural decision for my triangle character.

Last up is my fire spirit tiger! I wanted to go for a Japanese mascot/anime sidekick look, so I hope that communicates well in my design! I wanted to make him squishy and soft like a teddy bear, but with undeniable powers that he can't even begin to grasp, hence the gem staff and fire tail. I had fun playing with effects for both and tried to give his elemental traits a unique look. I hope you like the way he turned out!

But yeah, those are my Shape Language characters! I hope you enjoyed looking at them as much as I enjoyed drawing them! Re-learning Photoshop was a challenge, but a fun one at that. I haven't used Photoshop since... well, at least 2018.

So it was interesting to see how the program has changed. I'll continue to learn the hotkeys so I can increase my work output. I'm much faster in software such as Procreate... and this picture had a lot of not so awesome drafts that were indicative of my re-learning of this software.

The little tiger was redrawn at least 5 times before I got to the final version. But I finished him and that's all that matters!

Well, anyway! Thanks for reading! I'll have more progress pictures for you to look at soon- I'll be working in 3D again and I'm happy to document my journey here as I do!

Until next time!

Drive, Go! Go!
